The Serra Club of Lubbock was established on November 24, 1966. Affiliated with Serra International, the Serrans are a group of lay men and women who dedicate themselves to praying for and promoting vocations to the priesthood and the religious life. Serrans have also worked to establish ways of showing appreciation to the priests, deacons, and sisters who have dedicated their lives to living and spreading the Gospel. Serrans take a special interest in supporting seminarians both financially and spiritually as they pass through their years of formation. The Serrans have sponsored high school essay contests and award ceremonies for altar servers throughout the diocese and by these activities hope to stir up interest in a religious vocation among the young. Serrans in their gold vests assist as ushers at special liturgical functions, notably ordination Masses for priests and deacons. From the start the Serra Club’s monthly meetings have provided a forum in which clergy, nuns, and laity were invited speak on themes dear to their hearts. Father Malcolm Neyland, the Serra Club’s chaplain for twenty years, recently remarked that he owed his own vocation to the Serrans, and that he personally knew of at least 36 Lubbock diocesan priests whose vocations had been inspired or nourished by the Serrans.
